This is the type of dilemma that is common among students, who have a passion around something, but don’t necessarily meet the criteria to gain access to the college or university courses that will put them on the path to their career goal.
It can be very frustrating, because often (but not always), the requirements to gain access to a program, aren’t even used in the end profession! But, it is a method to weed out the strongest students, especially in a competitive program. But you don’t have to despair if you find yourself in this situation!
Chances are, if you aren’t strong in one area you are strong in another! And, chances are, there are opportunities to use YOUR strengths somewhere in the industry that you are passionate about.
For example, you are a strong advocate for environmental protection. You are a member of Green Peace. You want to do your part to help maintain, and reverse the damages done to the environment by climate change. You love the outdoors! But – no matter how hard you try, you cant get the grades in the math and sciences courses to gain entry to the Environmental Engineering program you have had your eye on. At the same time, however, you do well in English and the languages – and quite enjoy those subjects because of the success you have. So here is an idea…. What about applying to a Public Relations / Communications program, where you can learn how to make an impression on the public concerning environmental matters. Perhaps, you can work for an Environmental Engineering company as their Public Relations or Communications Director!
Utilize your strengths to make your impact! Don’t fight against them! Your journey into the Environment Protection industry, might be a two step process, but you can fulfil your dream… just not in the way you originally saw it.
