The 'Year Off' Dilemma

I hear this from students all of the time. The (mostly) well intentioned plan to take a break from school, and make some money before starting a post secondary program.
Of course, this is a personal decision - some of us just aren't ready to make a commitment to a college or university program, some of us have other personal issues going on it our lives that will impede our intention to go to school, some of us need to get to work and make some money to live on while away at school etc etc. In these cases, there isn't much of a choice but be wary of that abyss of time that follows high school!
If you dont have a job lined up, make it your job to find one every day. Get up early! Keep a schedule like you had when you were going to school. Of course, you deserve a break but try not to fall into the trap of the comforts of summer living... because it can be hard to get going again! And, depending on your personality, it can be harder for some than others... you know those friends Im talking about! ;)
Also, start developing a plan for college or university now! Explore your options, get some help, read some course descriptions. Apply and enrol as soon as possible so that you have a clear vision for your immediate future. Not having a clear plan can be detrimental to your future... there are so many people I talk to who find themselves in the job they took directly after high school, 3, 4, 5 years later! Not to mention, those that find themselves in the same job 25+ years later, having never pursued their dreams!!
Of course, it is never too late to start your career journey, and if you have a job that you enjoy and makes you a decent living then great! - maybe you dont even have to start a post-secondary program - Lots of people dont, and do have successful careers.
But, if you do have a dream, if you have passion for a career, dont loose sight of it because of lack of a plan. Its amazing how easy it can happen once adult life takes hold, you start family and have financial responsibilities, only to look back on what could have been.
