My parents pushed me into this.

When I hear this sentiment from students, I stop, return any funds that have been paid to me and wish the student luck. No one can care more about your future than you do.

I understand that parents can be over bearing, pushy and demanding. But you must understand that no matter how it comes across to you, the intention of your parent to help comes from a place of deep, true love for you.

I know this first hand. I had/have an over bearing parent who was always soooo worried about what I was going to amount to, what I was going to do with my life as a teenager. And I resented it. I hated it. So trust me when I say, I’ve been there and I get it. But in my wise old age, with kids of my own, I can now see that the intent was always golden and I can now appreciate it.

However, no matter how old you are, YOU must be ready to look at your future and your goals and put them into action yourself. You can’t be pushed into it. Some parents may understand that and some are so blinded by their love and concern for you that they just can’t.

Understand and accept that about them - it may help you to appreciate and take advantage of the help that they are providing for you.
