Matching Passions and Realism

We all have things we are personally passionate about. If we are one of the lucky ones, we are able to use these passions to make a living. If we aren't so lucky, we must still find time to utilize our passions in our personal time outside of our working life - it's part of a good self-care routine. Work is not meant to be our life.. its meant to support our lives! However, careers aren't quite as cut and dry as this sounds! You do have options.
Lets say you have a passion for oil painting... and you're good at it. You have your own gallery in the spare room at home and you have sold a few paintings over the years. In your dreams, you would love to quit your current Administrative job at the local insurance broker, to paint and sell your art full time.... but its not in the cards as the Admin job is the one that is paying your mortgage and feeding your family. So what do you do?
What you do at work, is almost as important as the people you work with, as the environment you work within, as the end goal of the company you work for. Even if you cant change your role, changing your working environment can mean a whole world of happiness to you. Imagine our oil painter moves his or her Administrative job in the Insurance field, to an Administrative job in the media arts, advertising, marketing or graphic design fields? Can you picture the differences in the daily structure, what the people wear, what their outside interests are in these very different industries? The people in the more creative industries are your 'herd'! They are like-minded, they get you, they have common interests - even if you aren't using your artistic skills, you can be happy at work - and who knows, there may be room for growth for you in a more creative direction within your new company! Imagine that!!
