I Cant Find a Job with My Degree!

I’m sure we’ve all heard this frustrating sentiment from a student or two in our lives. And it is the ultimate frustration when you’ve worked so hard and spent so much money on earning your degree only to settle for a job that in no way puts you on the path to your career goal.

So what should you do??

#1 you need to assess your job search efforts. It’s a competitive market no matter where you look. Is your resume up to par? Are you targeting the right companies? And are you flooding the market with your resume?? I hear many complaints that about a difficult job search only to hear that only 20 applications have been submitted. You need to get hundreds out there to make an impression and get the opportunities that you desire. Finding a job is a job!! Don’t settle. Work the market consistently and it will happen.

#2 what kind of ‘level’ position are you expecting? Often we are so proud of our educational accomplishments that we think we should start at the top! Think again. Be modest. Expect to earn the top jobs by putting in your time just as those have before you.

#3 if you cant find THE job you’ve been hoping for. Get your foot in the door with an entry level position. The important thing is to get into a company where you can grow, make contacts, work with like minded people and earn respect - even if you have to start in a reception, customer service or labour role.

#4 Don’t give up!! Keep going! Make contacts! Follow up on applications! Work it! Do all of this even if you have to take a temporary job while you are searching for the job that will be the start of the career you have worked for and dreamt of.
