What Students Say...

Well, look at you!! Congratulations! You are in the drivers seat now! Most students will have a good idea which school they want to choose if they are lucky enough to have a choice. But some may be caught off guard by the choices they are given!

Speaking from experience with my own kids... the best thing to do is take the time and book a campus tour. Walking the campus to get a feel for the 'vibe' at the school gives you a good feel for what is going to work well for you. Schools that are built into bigger cities, are much different then those that are situated outside of a city and are more self contained. There are older, more established schools with Hogwarts style buildings and there are new, more modern campuses... and there are combinations of both.

You may want to consider the distance the campus is from home as well.. especially during your first year out of the comforts of home; it can be a bit daunting when home is out of reach when you need it most.

And then of course, you have to consider the program and what it offers to you. Most accredited courses in Canadian universities are very similar in their content, but some have better reputations than others. Is there a Co-op offered? Are there working opportunities in the school's city, where you might be able to develop experience and contacts for future post-graduation employment?

Lastly, there are costs to consider. Living in a large city's downtown core, or in their school residences, is going to cost more than in a more rural school location. Tuitions can vary too between schools and programs, so look carefully at the costs.

These are a few of the considerations that I discuss with my students when they are in the midst of choosing programs and schools! Its an awesome problem to have!! :)
